G500H Flight Display

The G500H is designed to fit neatly into the limited panel space you have available. It features dual LCD screens with your Primary Flight Display located on the right side and your Multifunction Display on the left.

The PFD display consolidates all primary situational information regarding your position, speed, attitude, vertical rate, altitude and flight progress, as well as GPS active waypoint, distance-to-waypoint, desired and actual track, and more directly in front of you.

The MFD provides detailed moving-map graphics of your aircraft’s current position in relation to ground features, as well as geo-referenced charts, navaids, flight plan routings and more. Garmin SafeTaxi® and FliteCharts® come pre-installed, providing for safe, confident maneuvering in the air or on the ground.

A simple-to-navigate interface is accessed by a familiar rotary knob for data entry and soft-keys for mode selection. A front-loading SD™ card slot makes it easy to update databases.

HSVT™ Synthetic Vision

For enhanced visual orientation, Garmin HSVT™ Helicopter Synthetic Vision Technology is also available as an optional upgrade to the G500H. Using sophisticated computer modeling to recreate a virtual topographic landscape from the system’s terrain alerting database, HSVT gives helicopter pilots a clear depiction of ground and water features, airports, obstacles, traffic and more – all shown in 3-D perspective view on the primary flight display.

Garmin HSVT graphics look so real, it’s almost like having a clear-day “out-the-window” view of your flight situation – even in the darkest nighttime VFR or other low-visibility conditions. Although synthetic vision is not intended to replace traditional attitude and directional cues as a primary flight reference, it does augment the pilot’s view of this data by providing a realistic visual frame of reference. For example, when flying in areas where rising terrain may pose a hazard, Garmin HSVT uses its database to “paint” the landscape with amber or red overlays showing where potential CFIT risks exist. Towers or obstacles that may encroach upon one’s flight path are also color-highlighted with hazard-appropriate symbology.

Terrain Awareness

A Helicopter Terrain Awareness and Warning System (HTAWS), is available for our GTN touchscreen avionics and GNS 430W/530W navigators. While you concentrate on the task at hand, HTAWS works in the background to monitor terrain and obstacles. It issues alerts to instances that require your attention. These alerts can show on the GTN or GNS, on the G500H PFD, or on a remote annunciator. Voice callouts enhance situational awareness while allowing you to keep eyes looking forward.

HTAWS provides 5-color terrain shading and obstacles on your display. Red indicates terrain is 250’ or more above the aircraft altitude. Orange indicates terrain is at the aircraft altitude to 250’ above the aircraft altitude. Yellow indicates terrain within 250 feet below the aircraft altitude. Green indicates terrain is 500 to 250’ below the aircraft altitude. And black indicates terrain is 500 feet and below the aircraft altitude.

A pilot selectable configuration lets HTAWS alert you with voice call-outs when your altitude descends in intervals to 500, 400, 300, 200 and 100’. When operating close to terrain or landing away from airports or heliports, you can put HTAWS into reduced protection mode. This allows close operations while still providing protection from terrain or obstacles. That way, you only get the alerts that you deem are critical.

GTN Touchscreen Avionics

Garmin GTN series of touchscreen GPS/Nav/Comm avionics have been designed to meet the stringent helicopter vibration and temperature testing standards needed for environmental qualification. Built-in WAAS/SBAS technology uses enhanced GPS signals to enable IFR flight and vertical glidepath approaches into non-ILS equipped runways and heliports.

The GTN series for helicopters incorporates three helicopter-specific databases. The first is an obstacle database that adds nearly 30,000 additional low-altitude obstacles. A new terrain database offers a level of resolution that’s among the highest in the industry. And a helicopter navigation database lets operators navigate to over 7,000 additional heliports. Plus, optional Built-in HTAWS provides operators with visual and audible alerts of potential terrain and obstacle conflicts along the flight path.

The vivid display on the GTN provides detailed mapping capabilities and the option to display and control TAS/TCAS traffic, datalink weather, weather radar and more. The GTN 725 and 750 also support remote transponder and audio processor control, potentially saving you valuable panel space. Because many helicopter missions require the use of night vision goggles, the GTN series is optionally available with NVG compatibility, as well.

Traffic Systems

For further enhanced traffic awareness, add a Garmin Traffic Advisory System (TAS) or Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS). These systems feature exclusive Garmin CLEAR CAS™ technology, allowing ADS-B enhanced threat tracking.

While the intruder target will show up on a G500H PFD (with optional HSVT enabled), added situational awareness is provided through an ATC-like spoken format: “Traffic. 10 O’Clock. High” (or “Low” or “Same Altitude”). Pilots will know instantly where to look, keeping eyes out to locate the target on the display.

Passive surveillance of aircraft equipped with ADS-B “extended squitter” capability enables the system to more accurately derive the target aircraft’s range, bearing and relative altitude.

With traffic data graphically displayed on GTN touchscreen avionics, GNS navigator or G500H MFD, pilots can track specific flight trajectories of other aircraft in their vicinity – gaining a much clearer picture of their overall flight situation.

Datalink Weather

A great tool for helping helicopter pilots avoid inadvertent flight into adverse weather or low visibility conditions, SiriusXM® Satellite Weather service is available with the installation of a Garmin GDL 69 datalink receiver (subscription required). With this option, high-resolution NEXRAD imagery, METARs, TAFs, precipitation, lightning strikes, storm cell data and other weather updates for the entire U.S. can be accessed from a G500H flight display, as well as a GTN or GNS. With the GDL 69A, you can even access over 170 channels of digital-quality satellite radio programming (additional SiriusXM service fee required).

Global weather data is available through the Iridium satellite network with the installation of a GSR 56 satellite datalink. The GSR 56 also enables inflight voice calling and text messaging (subscription required).

With a GDL 88 datalink, you can receive subscription-free Flight Information Service-Broadcast (FIS-B) weather broadcasts. This uplink provides graphical NEXRAD radar, METARs, TAFs, SIGMETs, AIRMETs, NOTAMs, TFRs and more when in range of ADS-B ground stations.

Audio Panel

Take command of your cockpit audio with the GMA 350H audio panel. Telligence™ voice control streamlines cockpit workload by enabling you to speak commands. For example, to select a Comm, you simply press a push-to-command button on the control stick and say “Comm 1” or “Comm 2.”

The GMA 350H introduces 3-D Audio to the rotorcraft cockpit, as well. This unique technology makes it seem as though different audio sources are coming from different directions around you so it's easier to focus your attention on one particular audio source from among many.

To help tame the challenging rotorcraft environment, the GMA 350H includes advanced auto squelch functionality that seamlessly adapts to quiet or noisy cockpit conditions without cutting words or clipping phrases. A flexible split Comm mode in allows the pilot and copilot to broadcast on separate channels. Plus a built-in digital voice recorder lets you play back missed ATC calls, frequency assignments and more.

Comm and Nav/Comm Radios

Incorporating a first-in-class frequency lookup database, the GTR 225 Comm and GNC 255 Nav/Comm bring whole new levels of efficiency and convenience to helicopter cockpit management. For example, with the handy “frequency lookup” function, pilots can simply enter the navaid or airport identifier to find the frequency (or frequencies) associated with that location: Tower, Ground, ATIS, Clearance Delivery and more. Moreover, with a compatible GPS input, the lookup function will automatically provide the station identifier once you’ve dialed in an assigned frequency. This allows pilots to easily verify who they’re talking to. Nearly all versions of both the GNC and GTR radios can be set for 25 or 8.33 kHz Comm spacing – providing up to 2280 channels with 8.33 spacing to meet compliance rules for Europe.

Select models of GTN touchscreen avionics also feature built-in Comm and Nav radios that can help integrate your cockpit. A helpful recall function lets pilots store multiple radio frequencies in memory for quick access during flight. With an optionally installed switch on the controls, this safety-enhancing feature enables pilots to easily select from often-used radio frequencies while leaving their hands free for operations.

Radar Altimeter

This all-digital radar altimeter offers the latest and most accurate technology for tracking your current altitude above terrain. Whether it’s over choppy water, rough terrain, tree canopies, sand or other less-than-ideal surfaces, you’ll fly with greater confidence knowing just how much room you have to maneuver. Patent-pending technology in the GRA 5500 incorporates built-in self-test monitors that continuously cross check the data and system integrity to assure an accurate measurement of your above-ground level (AGL) altitude.

The system is able to intelligently process hundreds of altitude measurements per second and apply advanced digital filters to help detect and mitigate false altitude returns. This also provides for a simpler installation as it eliminates the need for long lengths of antenna cables that are traditionally required in the installation of radar altimeters. The GRA 5500 can also integrate with existing systems to enhance night vision goggle (NVG) operations and fulfill the radar altimeter requirements for such advanced applications as HTAWS, CAT II ILS operations, and TCAS II/ACAS II.
